University of Illinois at Chicago: Virtual Reality's CAVE Pioneer ...

Credit: Callie Lipkin

Why "CAVE"?

According to the Electronic Visualization Laboratory at the University of Illinois at Chicago, which unveiled the first CAVE system at the ACM SIGGRAPH conference in 1992, CAVE is both a recursive acronym ? cave automatic virtual environment ? and a reference to Plato's The Republic, in which the Greek philosopher introduces the Allegory of the Cave to explore the ideas of perception, reality and illusion.

In Plato's allegory, Socrates lays out a scenario in which prisoners, held in a cave since birth, can see only one wall, illuminated from behind them by fire. All they can see are shadows, which they perceive to be reality ? real, but not real, like the virtual reality in EVL's CAVE ? and now, CAVE2.

There are Paleolithic and Mesolithic caves tucked away in many corners of the globe. There also are many CAVEs ? cave automatic virtual environments ? found in ?Austria, Japan and cities throughout the United States.

But the very first ? and trademarked ? CAVE was built at the University of Illinois at Chicago and demonstrated in 1992. Today, UIC's Electronic Visualization Laboratory invites researchers, artists, students and other stakeholders to step into CAVE2 ? a virtual reality environment unlike any other.

"We've been finding ways to improve the technology since the first CAVE was built," says Jason Leigh, UIC professor of computer science and director of the EVL. "It's one of the things our lab is known for."

The original CAVE was a four-sided (three walls and a floor) room that used projection technology to make visitors feel as though they had stepped into ?another world. Wearing 3D glasses and a location sensor that tracked their movements, researchers and students could interact with projected objects that appeared to float in front of them. Almost every other similar space in the world ? whether called a CAVE or not ? uses projectors to create such illusions.

But projection has its limits, which the EVL began ?addressing more than a decade ago.

"In the 1990s, the only technology available to us was projectors, and they had all these limitations," Leigh says. "They were dim, expensive, hard to calibrate, and the color was frequently off. But we understood early on that things like CAVEs and tiled display walls were the new lenses through which scientists were going to look at their data. If they were going to spend millions of dollars on ?instruments for generating or collecting all their data, it made sense to us that they'd want something that gives them the best look at their data. Why look at it with a poor display?"

In 2002, EVL began prototyping tiled, flat-panel LCD screen walls. Early LCD screens were expensive and surrounded by thick frames, or bezels. When arranged together to make up a bigger screen, unsightly gaps created distortions in the picture. They also did not project in stereoscopic 3D. But the researchers at EVL believed ? correctly ? that display manufacturers would address such limitations over time, making LCDs well suited to CAVE designs.

Launched in October 2012, CAVE2 is a circular room ? 24 feet in diameter, roughly 7 feet high ? comprising 18 columns of four 46-inch LCD screens. CAVE2 was built in the same space as UIC's original CAVE, but the new incarnation offers much more room to move around.

"The quality of the graphics is so much better," says Andy Johnson, UIC associate professor of computer science and a collaborator on CAVE2, who says that he was drawn to the EVL years ago by the original CAVE design. "The contrast is better, the color is better, the number of pixels is incredible. Moving around the space feels more natural. It's a much better collaborative experience than it was before."

CAVE2 flat-panel LCD screens include micropolarizers, which, when viewed through stereoscopic glasses, ?create a 3D effect ? or the illusion of depth ? like that found in movie theaters showing 3D feature films. The challenge with such technology is that it's best viewed straight-on. But in CAVE2, an immersive environment with displays that span from the floor almost to the ?ceiling, straight-on viewing isn't always possible.

"One of the issues you run into with micropolarization is a problem with vertical off-axis viewing," Leigh says. In other words, when a user looks up or down at the display, the image appears distorted. "You get ghosting when you're not aligned with the micropolarizers. So we asked Planar if it was possible to shift the micropolarizers to accommodate off-axis viewing for LCD panels at the extreme top and bottom of the CAVE2."

Custom micropolarizers were configured for CAVE2 by the manufacturer, Planar Systems, and EVL provided funding for the research. At first, there was some concern that the necessary adjustments would hinder the displays' brightness. But in the end, Planar succeeded in customizing panels for the CAVE2's top and bottom rows, in just the way EVL researchers had envisioned them. The modifications were made using Planar's Clarity Matrix line of passive stereo displays, which form the middle rows of CAVE2.

"We evaluated the panels, tested them in various configurations, and we were confident enough that we could pull the trigger and go for the full system," Leigh says.

The EVL team had to hustle to meet the deadlines for opening CAVE2. Five students spent the summer of 2012 building the system, but the displays needed to be delivered quickly.

"CDW?G was instrumental in making the CAVE2 possible because they could work directly with Planar to fulfill our order," Leigh says. "CDW?G is a preferred vendor of the university, which made it possible for us to get the exact products we needed from the vendor we had a trusted relationship with. If we hadn't gone through CDW?G, we still wouldn't have a CAVE2 today."

A Massive Tech Upgrade

In the new CAVE2 system, applications, data and graphics are processed in a server cluster located 10 feet from the CAVE itself. The cluster includes 36 servers ? one per two screens ? powered by 2.9 gigahertz, 16-core Intel Xeon processors and NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680 graphics cards. The current cluster provides more than 4,000 times the processing power of the original CAVE's MIPS-based system. It also boasts 9,000 times the memory and 22,500 times the original CAVE's storage space. The system's 100-?gigabit-per-second network connection is a huge upgrade over its predecessor's 10-?megabit-per-second network.

The Planar Clarity Matrix displays are unique in that their components that process images and give off heat also sit in the equipment room with the servers, making them easier to service as well as keeping the CAVE2 room comfortable without additional cooling. The rack-mounted Planar electronics drive the displays and communicate with the screens over standard Ethernet cabling.

Above the CAVE2 is a circular array of Vicon ?infrared cameras, which detect location sensors on 3D glasses to calculate the wall imagery so that the perspective changes as the viewer moves his or her head.

"We can give someone the perfect first-person view of a virtual world," Leigh says. "It makes objects appear to float, so you can look around and under them."

In the original CAVE, the location sensor was tethered to the system for motion tracking. The new wireless ?design offers users freedom to move about the space.

"One of my students is looking at models of the brain and analyzing blood flow with a member of the bio?engineering department," says Johnson. "The brain is very 3D, so they're taking MRI scans to model where veins and arteries are. Then they're using simulation software to figure out how all the smaller veins and ?arteries fill up the space, and to simulate blood clots and strokes and figure out how blood reroutes itself."

Research Potential

The EVL has ported other programs and data to CAVE2, including a simulation of a high-speed rail project ?being done at UIC in collaboration with researchers in ?Urbana, Ill., to analyze stress and strain data, as well as a fly-through of Mars used at Chicago's Adler ?Planetarium.

David Hofman, professor of physics at UIC and the acting head of the Physics Department, says CAVE2's ?visualization capabilities make it a natural tool for ?research. Now his department is working to integrate CAVE2 with the curriculum.

"I've been blown away by its capabilities," Hofman says. "We have a very popular introductory astronomy course, and a big part of modern astronomy is visualization. We see these beautiful pictures from NASA and the Hubble Telescope. Now being able to see them dynamically and move around them is an incredible experience. We're really at the cusp of being able to use this technology in physics education."

Scientists identify culprit in obesity-associated high blood pressure

Jan. 31, 2013 ? Researchers have described a key mechanism responsible for the? brain's regulation of obesity-associated disease.

Obesity and its related conditions such as type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease and stroke are among the most challenging of today's healthcare concerns. Together, they constitute the biggest killer in western society. New findings, published in Cell, have identified a target that could hold the key to developing safe therapies to treat obesity and its associated conditions.

Although recent research has begun to unravel some of the pathways that control how information is processed by our nervous system regulating body weight and cardiovascular function, the exact mechanisms through which signals are sensed by the brain and translated into co-ordinated metabolic and cardiovascular responses remain unclear.

A University of Bristol team, with funding from the British Heart Foundation (BHF), has now identified that a target found to be critical in the brain's regulation of body weight, is also crucially involved in the development of obesity-associated conditions. Researchers describe the mechanism behind a key molecule, known as melanocortin-4-receptor (MC4R), whose mutation or loss in both human and animal models has shown to cause severe obesity with type 2 diabetes.

While previous studies have shown that small activators of the molecule, which increase MC4R activity, have the desirable effect of reducing food intake and insulin secretion from the pancreas (important to suppress the development of type 2 diabetes), it is not clear how, at the same time, they trigger the undesirable effect of increasing blood pressure.

The team has now identified a mechanism for MC4R-mediated regulation of the activity of the autonomic nervous system to maintain appropriate blood pressure and insulin levels. The autonomic nervous system, which regulates internal organs and processes that are not under our control, is split into the parasympathetic and sympathetic nervous system, commonly exerting opposing influences on the structures they supply with nerves.

Researchers demonstrated that the activation of the MC4R inhibits parasympathetic neurons in the brain stem area of the central nervous system (CNS), while activating sympathetic neurons in the spinal cord. The team further demonstrates, in genetically-modified mouse models of human loss of MC4R function, that MC4Rs in these CNS areas are to blame for the development of obesity-induced increases in blood pressure.

They also report that MC4Rs in these CNS areas are pivotal in maintaining appropriate insulin levels to stave off type 2 diabetes. Thus, by carefully balancing positive and negative forces on the autonomic nervous system, the MC4R maintains equilibrium of appropriate blood pressure and insulin levels. This is independent of the MC4R's role in the regulation of food intake elsewhere in the CNS.

MC4R is a target of intense pharmaceutical interest and the data from this research helps in our understanding of the CNS mechanisms regulating homeostatic body weight, blood pressure and insulin levels through a distributed network of MC4Rs. These findings may facilitate the development of appropriate, safe therapies to treat obesity and its associated conditions.

Dr Nina Balthasar, one of the study's lead authors and a researcher in the University's School of Physiology and Pharmacology, said: "Obesity is a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease with recent statistics showing that obese adults are three to four times more likely to develop high blood pressure.

"In order to curb the escalating incidence of obesity and obesity-related diseases, a primary prevention goal must be to understand the physiological processes underlying our vulnerability to weight gain -- knowledge that is central to the development of novel, effective therapies.

Our data illustrate the complexity of the CNS pathways governing the body's metabolic balance and highlight the challenges ahead for the development of safe therapies. "

Dr Shannon Amoils, Research Advisor at the BHF, which part-funded the study, added: "This research increases our understanding of how the nervous system affects our metabolism, and the development of high blood pressure due to obesity. With further knowledge of this complex area we hope scientists will be able to find safe and effective ways of treating obesity-related heart and circulatory disorders."

The British Heart Foundation and Lister Institute for Preventive Medicine-funded study, entitled 'Melanocortin-4-Receptors Reciprocally Regulate Sympathetic and Parasympathetic Preganglionic Neurons' is published in Cell on 31 January 2013.

BlackBerry 10 launches today, makes iOS the oldest major operating system in mobile

BlackBerry is holding their BlackBerry 10 launch event today -- technically several events around the world -- and CrackBerry is live in both New York City and Toronto, and they'll be bringing you back everything you need to know. (Basically whether this'll be Rocky 3 for RIM... or Rocky 5.)

Most interesting to us, when BlackBerry 10 launches, it'll make iOS the oldest major operating system in mobile. Back in 2007 iOS was the newest, of course, and a massive leap beyond the old, instantly outdated Symbian, BBOS, PalmOS, and Windows Mobile operating systems of the time.

Then Google began to pivot Android into what eventually launched with the G1. Palm ditched PalmOS for webOS. Microsoft put down Windows Mobile in favor of Windows Phone 7. And now even RIM has replaced BBOS with BlackBerry 10.

Whether it works for everyone or not isn't the point. Whether it's ultimate successful in the market doesn't matter. Either way, triumph of tragedy, it'll bring new ideas to the table.

We're still months away from iOS 7, and hopefully Apple wowing us all over again.

But today is RIM's shot.

Keep it locked on CrackBerry for full BlackBerry 10 live event coverage and more throughout the day.

In the fight against obesity, it's all about balance | MNN - Mother ...

What role can a soft drink company play in America?s war on obesity? In the face of controversial decisions like New York City?s soda ban, The Coca-Cola Company believes it can play a role in a healthier diet and has instituted several programs to inspire people to live healthier, active lifestyles. Some of these programs involve rebuilding community parks, while another program calls upon physicians to record physical activity as a vital sign during patient visits. MNN, which counts Coca-Cola as one of its sponsors, interviewed Dr. Rhona Applebaum, Coca-Cola?s Chief Scientific and Regulatory Officer, to find out more. Applebaum received her master?s degree in nutrition from Drexel University and her doctorate in food microbiology from University of Wisconsin. She leads the Scientific and Regulatory Affairs Division at Coca-Cola, which is in part responsible for driving research and education programs about calorie intake, health, physical activity and food safety.

?

MNN: What can a soft drink company like Coca-Cola do to help people live healthier lives?
Rhona Applebaum: Coca-Cola?s active, healthy living philosophy is about encouraging people to eat right and move more. I subscribe to the fact that it?s about the whole diet and not about an individual food, which is what some people tend to focus on.

?

Active, healthy living is absolutely essential for our company; it?s not just some nice sound bite we like to say ? it?s a fact. We know that our business can only be as healthy as the communities in which we operate. That?s why we?ve supported programs like Triple Play that encourage kids to eat a balanced diet, become more physically active and increase their ability to engage in healthy relationships.

?

And in 2012 our philanthropic arm of the Company ? The Coca-Cola Foundation ? awarded almost $10 million to healthy living initiatives across North America.

?

Are soft drinks unfairly targeted in your opinion? Do they have a rightful place in the diet?

We firmly believe all our products have a place in an active, healthy lifestyle. Any food or beverage can fit into your life ? it?s all about how much and how often. At the end of the day, we encourage people to be as active as they can be; we encourage and promote physical activity. The higher your energy balance ? balancing the calories you take in with the calories you burn ? the healthier you?re going to be. We consume calories from many different sources. But we shouldn?t single out one food or beverage alone as the unique cause of obesity.

?

Please explain higher energy balance.
?Energy balance? refers to the concept of balancing calories in with calories out to maintain a healthy weight. Let?s compare two people, one who consumes 2,500 calories per day versus one who consumes only 1,500 calories. You might think the person who only eats 1,500 calories a day would look healthier because he appears thin, but that person probably is not getting all the essential nutrients he needs. At 1,500 calories, he?s probably not going to get the necessary physical activity levels, either.

?

On the other hand, if you?re eating a balanced diet and taking in 2,500 calories a day and are very physically active (and the activity can be moderate and not necessarily vigorous); if you?re moving and eating and you?re burning as many calories as you consume, then sure, you can enjoy any food and beverage within the Coca-Cola portfolio, including ones that are low-calorie or zero-calorie.

?

What has Coca-Cola done to encourage its employees to lead healthier lifestyles?
We have a great wellness facility at our Atlanta headquarters. We have signs throughout our corporate campus reminding employees to take the stairs and to park far away from the entrance. We also provide incentives ?for our employees around the country?to be physically active, including discounted gym memberships, $60-off annual medical contributions just for completing online health assessments, and we also encourage our people to measure their health stats regularly.

?

Personally, I have a standing desk. (Yes, I practice what I preach.) But to be healthy, you don?t need anything complicated or expensive. If you work at a desk all day, you need to get moving throughout the day and try to stand as much as you can while you?re on the computer. Simply take a walk when you get a chance during the day or take the stairs ? it?s the little things that will add up. ?

?

Do you think Coca-Cola is playing a part in reducing in childhood obesity?
I think we?re a part of the solution but it will take all of us ? government, business and civil society ? working together to find meaningful solutions to such a complex issue. In fact, we worked with the beverage industry to remove full-calorie soft drinks from schools in 2006 and replaced them with lower-calorie, smaller-portion beverage options.? By 2010, we reduced beverage calories delivered to schools by a dramatic 90 percent. We are also working with leaders like The National Governors Council on Physical Fitness to build fitness centers across the country that ?provide the means for people to get active. To help change the way people think about nutrition and exercise we need to work together. What I?d like to see accomplished, and what Coca-Cola is striving for in the schools, is to better develop standards of fitness and nutrition. We have testing standards in basic subjects, but we also need nutrition and fitness standards because kids who eat better, and who are more active, will thrive in school.

?

What are the most successful programs Coca-Cola has implemented to date to increase health awareness?
We have several programs that are contributing greatly to fostering and teaching principles of healthy lifestyles, but I?ll name two: Triple Play is a program that was launched in 2005 by the Boys & Girls Clubs of America in collaboration with the Department of Health and Human Services with support from The Coca-Cola Company to encourage kids to eat a balanced diet, become more physically active and increase their ability to engage in healthy relationships. A review of the program found that boys and girls who participated in Triple Play were more physically active and had a better understanding of nutrition than those who did not participate. The kids? self-esteem also soared.

The National Governors Council on Physical Fitness is also making a big impact. We?ve dedicated more than $5 million to provide 100 communities with new fitness centers for schools. In addition, The Coca-Cola Foundation has awarded $3.4 million in grants to support fitness and nutrition programs in the U.S. and around the world. Working with the National Foundation for Governor's Fitness Councils and the American College of Sports Medicine, Coca-Cola will place 100 new fitness centers in schools across the U.S. over the next five years. The unbranded centers will feature new fitness equipment and provide more than 5 million workouts annually; helping communities put physical activity back into schools.

?

You work in a male-dominated world. What was your experience like going through college and post-graduate?
For my post-graduate work, I focused on science: the theoretical and practical elements in nutrition as well as healthy lifestyle factors; toxicology; plant pathology and sustainable agriculture. Long before the days of social media, I realized the importance of networking and working in a global society. Yes, I?m the first female chief scientist at Coca-Cola. Although women are still underrepresented in science, my abilities were developed because of amazing male mentors. They looked at me as nothing but a professional who they wanted to groom. I am where I am today because of my ?STEM? foundation (science, technology, engineering and math) mentoring. We?re not going to be able to compete in terms of pioneering developments in health and science without that kind of mentoring ... I?m very passionate about that.

?

I do think that women are catching up, but we still need more women to go into STEM disciplines. At Wisconsin there were many women Ph.D. candidates in science-related disciplines, but that?s not always the case across the U.S. or globally. And, though more is needed, I am proud to say we have many women working at Coca-Cola throughout the company.

Ineffective Security Awareness Training Leaves Businesses ...

Ineffective security awareness training is leaving UK businesses dangerously exposed to the significant consequences of an information security breach. Despite increased levels of training at both financial services and non-FS businesses, for many people, the training is too basic, simply a box ticking exercise, or worse, giving them a false sense of security, warns Protiviti, a global consulting firm.

Protiviti?s Security Awareness Survey, which canvassed 1,000 employees including senior executives, found that four-fifths (81%) of respondents believed they have an average to excellent understanding of modern IT security and risks within their organisation.

However, in a separate Protiviti study of senior information security and risk professionals working across a range of UK firms, it was reported that key information security messages are still not getting through to significant numbers of employees, and that good information security practices are still not part of the risk culture at many UK businesses. This is despite recent, high-profile cases of security breaches, often caused by human error and the severe consequences that have followed.

According to senior information security and risk professionals, around two-thirds (61%) of employees actually have a generally low level of understanding of information security risks and fail to put into practice effective procedures they have been taught in training.

Almost three quarters (71%) thought employees had a poor understanding of the positive role they could play in reducing security risks and a majority (57%) said they had noticed no change in employee behaviour after completing security awareness training.

In contrast, according to the Security Awareness Survey, 93% of respondents that had undergone security training believed that it had made them more aware of information security risks and what they needed to do in order to reduce them. Alarmingly, almost four in ten office workers said they have never had data security awareness training.

This figure increases to over half (52%) if you only look at non-financial services organisations. Further, of those that have had training, a third (32%) have only had training in the last 12 months, which is clearly inadequate given the speed with which new information security threats emerge.

Ryan Rubin, Director, Protiviti UK, said: ?Many respondents to our survey report that they have made significant changes in the way that they work and the way they use technology at home following security awareness training. There is, therefore, value in training, provided it is effective. However, information security training needs to be more focused on employees? roles and the consequences of information security breaches and less on the basic mechanics of security.?

According to the Protiviti Security Awareness Survey, training does have an impact on behaviour. Asked how they had changed their behaviour after completing security training, 55% of employees said they had become more careful where they leave laptops, phones or USBs. The top five most changed behaviours overall were:

  • Being more careful where they leave laptops, phones or USBs (55%)
  • Being more wary with email (46%)
  • Being more wary of applications downloaded (45%)
  • Changing password complexity (39%)
  • Being more wary of photos/ comments on social media (37%)

?We continue to see security incidents arising that could have been easily avoided had better disciplines been followed. People are clearly not heeding the warnings and do not understand the very serious consequences of poor security practice.

?Many people will ignore rules where the rules are seen as an inconvenience, where it is deemed ?socially acceptable? or where there is perceived to be no personal consequences of failing to comply with the rules. For training to be effective, it needs to be tailored to the roles of employees, and many organisations need to review both the nature and frequency of their training. Reporting security breaches and ?near breaches? is one good way to help improve security awareness.

?While effective training does have an impact on employee behaviour, for many companies the wake-up call comes only when there is a significant incident, such as a major information security incident. By providing regular information security awareness training, with the right messages conveyed, many organisations can mitigate against the worst of these threats?, concluded Rubin.

Non Resident Home Loan Assistance from Future Financial

It is good to know that there are already companies that are specializing in providing loans to people. Some example includes non resident home loan, equity finance mortgage or EFM, investment home loans, low doc home loans, mortgage refinance, self employed home loans, first home owners construction grant, debt consolidation home loans and many more to mention. The financial institution is helping self employed individuals and those who are in the contracting sector to get the loans that they need for the situation.

The company will simply have to check certain details to support that you are indeed capable to pay them back the loan to a certain period of time. For instance, they will have to look to your annual income or the history of your employed status. That is where they will base their decision to offer the loan that you need as of the situation. At times, they are letting people borrow through annualized rate and of their contract salary. If you are wondering what you are going to do in order to qualify for the loans mentioned above, well it is important that you simply collect the necessary documentation needed. For example you can include your past pay slips or your tax records. You can also include the information about your future contracts and then the bank statements too. You may want to work part time to a company in order to let the financial company see that you are indeed earning regular money. Check the site of Future Financial for loan assistance today.

Fraud concerns linger over new Illinois license law

CHICAGO (AP) ? As Illinois becomes the fourth and most populous state to give illegal immigrants permission to drive, nagging concerns remain about whether there are enough safeguards to avoid the identity fraud and other pitfalls other states faced.

Democratic Gov. Pat Quinn signed Illinois' measure into law Sunday in Chicago. Backers, including Quinn, Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel and some of the state's top Republicans, tout it as a public-safety measure. They argue that required facial recognition technology is reliable enough to prevent fraud.

They hailed it as an important step for immigrant rights in Illinois, which approved its own Dream Act in 2010 to create a privately-funded scholarship program for immigrant students. President Barack Obama plans to discuss his plan to overhaul the immigration system during a trip to Las Vegas on Tuesday.

"This was a bipartisan effort to pass an important law," Quinn said. "When the president speaks on Tuesday, he can say about his home state of Illinois ... we not only passed the Dream Act last year, we passed driver's licenses for those who are undocumented ."

However, the law's opponents have pointed to hundreds of fraudulent cases in New Mexico, Washington and Utah after those states began giving illegal immigrants permission to drive. Illinois will not require applicants to be fingerprinted, for fear that would discourage immigrants from applying.

"How many people would apply for this document knowing that fingerprints will be going to (federal authorities)? Probably not all that many," said Fred Tsao, policy director of the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights, a driving-force behind the measure.

Proponents say it will allow an estimated 250,000 people unlawfully residing in the state to apply for a three-year temporary driver's license and require them to get training and insurance. The Illinois secretary of state's office said the licenses will be available starting in October.

Those ready for the change include 45-year-old Victoria Chavez.

"I need to get my driver's license because I have two kids," the Chicago woman said. "They need my support. This is a victory for all of us in the immigrant community."

The licenses will be like those already issued to certain foreign-born, legal visitors. Applicants will be photographed, and their photo will be entered into the state's facial recognition database ? like the rest of Illinois' licensed drivers? to verify their identity.

But other states' driving programs for illegal immigrants have been abused. New Mexico and Washington both issue licenses, while Utah issues a permit.

An Associated Press investigation last year found a striking pattern in New Mexico, suggesting immigrants tried to game the system to obtain a license. In one instance, 48 foreign-born individuals claimed to live at a smoke shop in Albuquerque to fulfill a residency condition.

Authorities also busted a fraud ring last year that forged documents for illegal immigrants to use after driving from as far as Illinois and North Carolina to obtain a New Mexico license. Republican Gov. Susana Martinez has vowed for years to repeal the decade-old measure, but the Legislature has rejected such efforts.

Washington's requirements attracted national attention when Jose Antonio Vargas, a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist, revealed his illegal immigration status in an essay for the New York Times Magazine in 2011. Vargas chronicled how he obtained his Washington license. State authorities conducted an investigation that revealed Vargas did not reside at the address he stated in his application and canceled his license.

Utah's permit is not valid for identification. Illinois' law follows suit.

Utah's Republican-controlled Legislature amended the state's law in 2011 to require illegal immigrants to be fingerprinted, and mandates that the state notify U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement if an applicant's fingerprint check yields a felony on record. If the applicant has a misdemeanor warrant outstanding, the state must notify the agency that is seeking the person's arrest.

That kind of information-sharing between state and immigration authorities worries Illinois' immigrant-rights advocates, such as Tsao, who pushed for the legislation without a fingerprinting requirement. They say fingerprinting could deter potential licensees from applying for fear of being identified and deported.

Local law enforcement officials argue in favor of fingerprinting.

"We could see if they have committed a crime; it could be a crime in another state or it could be a crime in their home country," said John Kennedy, executive director of the Illinois Association of Chiefs of Police.

The Illinois secretary of state's office says its facial recognition database is highly sophisticated and accurate. The program uses an algorithm to match more than a dozen facial features that are not easy to alter, such as eye sockets and sides of the mouth.

"The integrity of our driver's license system is a priority," said Henry Haupt, a spokesman for the office.

The bill's sponsor, Rep. Edward Acevedo, a Chicago Democrat, said state roads will be safer because illegal immigrants will receive training and be tested before obtaining a license. They also will be required to purchase insurance, Acevedo said.

Tsao's organization estimates uninsured illegal immigrant drivers cause $64 million in damage claims each year, an expense currently covered by increased premiums.

Eating deep-fried food linked to increased risk of prostate cancer

Jan. 28, 2013 ? Regular consumption of deep-fried foods such as French fries, fried chicken and doughnuts is associated with an increased risk of prostate cancer, and the effect appears to be slightly stronger with regard to more aggressive forms of the disease, according to a study by investigators at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center.

Corresponding author Janet L. Stanford, Ph.D., and colleagues Marni Stott-Miller, Ph.D., a postdoctoral research fellow and Marian Neuhouser, Ph.D., all of the Hutchinson Center's Public Health Sciences Division, have published their findings online in The Prostate. While previous studies have suggested that eating foods made with high-heat cooking methods, such as grilled meats, may increase the risk of prostate cancer, this is the first study to examine the addition of deep frying to the equation.

From French fries to doughnuts: Eating more than once a week may raise risk Specifically, Stanford, co-director of the Hutchinson Center's Program in Prostate Cancer Research, and colleagues found that men who reported eating French fries, fried chicken, fried fish and/or doughnuts at least once a week were at an increased risk of prostate cancer as compared to men who said they ate such foods less than once a month.

In particular, men who ate one or more of these foods at least weekly had an increased risk of prostate cancer that ranged from 30 to 37 percent. Weekly consumption of these foods was associated also with a slightly greater risk of more aggressive prostate cancer. The researchers controlled for factors such as age, race, family history of prostate cancer, body-mass index and PSA screening history when calculating the association between eating deep-fried foods and prostate cancer risk.

"The link between prostate cancer and select deep-fried foods appeared to be limited to the highest level of consumption -- defined in our study as more than once a week -- which suggests that regular consumption of deep-fried foods confers particular risk for developing prostate cancer," Stanford said.

Deep frying may trigger formation of carcinogens in food Possible mechanisms behind the increased cancer risk, Stanford hypothesizes, include the fact that when oil is heated to temperatures suitable for deep frying, potentially carcinogenic compounds can form in the fried food. They include acrylamide (found in carbohydrate-rich foods such as French fries), heterocyclic amines and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (chemicals formed when meat is cooked at high temperatures), aldehyde (an organic compound found in perfume) and acrolein (a chemical found in herbicides). These toxic compounds are increased with re-use of oil and increased length of frying time. Foods cooked with high heat also contain high levels of advanced glycation endproducts, or AGEs, which have been associated with chronic inflammation and oxidative stress. Deep-fried foods are among the highest in AGE content. A chicken breast deep fried for 20 minutes contains more than nine times the amount of AGEs as a chicken breast boiled for an hour, for example.

For the study, Stanford and colleagues analyzed data from two prior population-based case-control studies involving a total of 1,549 men diagnosed with prostate cancer and 1,492 age-matched healthy controls. The men were Caucasian and African-American Seattle-area residents and ranged in age from 35 to 74 years. Participants were asked to fill out a dietary questionnaire about their usual food intake, including specific deep-fried foods.

The first study of its kind "To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to look at the association between intake of deep-fried food and risk of prostate cancer," Stanford said. However, deep-fried foods have previously been linked to cancers of the breast, lung, pancreas, head and neck, and esophagus.

Because deep-fried foods are primarily eaten outside the home, it is possible that the link between these foods and prostate cancer risk may be a sign of high consumption of fast foods in general, the authors wrote, citing the dramatic increase in fast-food restaurants and fast-food consumption in the U.S. in the past several decades.

The project was supported by the National Cancer Institute and Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center.

North Korean leader indicates plan to conduct nuclear test

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un convened top security and foreign affairs officials and ordered them to take "substantial and high-profile important state measures," state media said Sunday, indicating that he plans to push forward with a threat to explode a nuclear device in defiance of the United Nations.

The meeting of top officials led by Kim makes clear that he backs Pyongyang's defiant stance in protest of U.N. Security Council punishment for a December rocket launch. The dispatch in the official Korean Central News Agency did not say when the meeting took place.

Last week, the Security Council condemned North Korea's Dec. 12 launch of a long-range rocket as a violation of a ban against nuclear and missile activity. The council, including North Korea ally China, punished Pyongyang with more sanctions and ordered the regime to refrain from a nuclear test ? or face "significant action."

North Korea responded by rejecting the resolution and maintaining its right to launch a satellite into orbit as part of a peaceful civilian space program.

It also warned that it would keep developing rockets and testing nuclear devices to counter what it sees as U.S. hostility. A rare statement was issued Thursday by the powerful National Defense Commission, the top governing body led by Kim.

North Korea cites a U.S. military threat in the region as a key reason behind its drive to build nuclear weapons. The two countries fought on opposite sides of the Korean War, which ended after three years in 1953 with an armistice, not a peace treaty. The U.S.-led U.N. Command mans the Demilitarized Zone dividing the two Koreas, and Washington stations more than 28,000 troops in South Korea to protect its ally.

North Korea is estimated to have enough weaponized plutonium for four to eight bombs, according to American nuclear scientist Siegfried Hecker, who visited the country's nuclear complex northwest of Pyongyang in November 2010.

However, it is not known whether North Korean scientists have found a way to build nuclear warheads small enough to mount on a long-range missile.

Experts say regular tests are needed to perfect the technique, and another atomic test could take the country closer to its goal of building a warhead that can be mounted on a missile designed to strike the United States. North Korea has carried out two nuclear tests, in 2006 and 2009.

South Korean defense officials say North Korea is technically ready to conduct a nuclear test in a matter of days.

Satellite photos taken Wednesday show that over the past month, roads have been kept clear of snow and that North Koreans may have been sealing the tunnel into a mountainside where a nuclear device would be detonated.

Analysis of the images of the Punggye-ri site was provided Friday to The Associated Press by 38 North, the website of the U.S.-Korea Institute at Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies.

The U.S., South Korea and other countries have warned North Korea not to go ahead with a nuclear test, saying that would only deepen the country's international isolation.

After meeting with Chinese officials Friday, U.S. envoy for North Korea Glyn Davies said a nuclear test would set back efforts to restart regional talks on the North's nuclear disarmament.

Wall Street brawl: Billionaires hurl insults on CNBC

7 hrs.

It was the smackdown heard round the world when billionaires Carl Icahn and Bill Ackman behaved more like bar-room brawlers (complete with expletives like "bull----!") on live television Friday?over their differences about a nutritional-supplements company.

"Our goal here was to shine a light on Herbalife," Pershing Square founder Ackman??said on "Fast Money," referring to the company which he called "a well-managed pyramid scheme."?Ackman has accused Herbalife of luring people, most of them low-income, into a distribution system he calls fraudulent.?

He said Friday on CNBC that the nutritional-supplement company "deserves the highest level of scrutiny." Ackman recently announced that he took a massive short position against Herbalife, essentially betting that the company's stock will tumble.

"Frankly, Carl did me a favor by picking on me,"??he?said?on?CNBC.

"Ackman is a liar," Icahn?said. "He's got one of the worst reputations on Wall Street."?Icahn also accused Ackman of destroying companies by publicly shorting their stocks.

"He's like the crybaby in the schoolyard,"?Icahn?said.

On Friday, Icahn, who has criticized Ackman's much-publicized short in Herbalife, issued a written statement.?"To get the record straight, I never asked Ackman to be my friend," Icahn wrote. "Quite to the contrary, Ackman has stated to me on more than one occasion that it's a shame we are not friends because then he could have invested with me. But, even if we were friends, I would never have invested with him because I believe he takes inordinate risks. HLF I believe proves this point."?

Ackman's?firm?manages?$12 billion in assets.?Carl Icahn, a fellow activist investor and one of the richest men in America,?has?an estimated fortune of nearly $15 billion.

Traders at the New York Stock Exchange punctuated the air with "oohs" and "aahs" during the arguing, while social networks lit up, with financial journalists and market watchers tweeting and posting as fast as their fingers could type.?

The setting was during the final half-hour of CNBC's "Fast Money Halftime Report" with Scott Wapner, who found himself as much of the story as the two participants.

Icahn repeatedly berated Wapner. Icahn insisted he was the one being bullied and on several occasions used the word "bull----" to describe his feelings about the on-air forum.

"I've really sort of had it with this Ackman guy," Icahn said early on.

"Carl, you think I want to you invest with you?" Ackman charged later.

"I wouldn't invest with you if you were the last man on Earth!" Icahn bellowed in an exchange typical of the show's tenor.

At the core of the dispute was Icahn's furor with Ackman over the latter's short position on Herbalife.?In turn, Ackman released a statement Thursday that recalled a legal dispute between the two parties 10 years ago that resulted in Icahn having to pay Ackman's investors $4.5 million plus interest.

While each combatant scored style points during the battle, if the winner was to be declared from the performance of Herbalife, Icahn scored a clear victory.

The company's shares surged as much as $2.15 in the half-hour melee, though gains cooled afterwards.Nearly as importantly, it was great theater.

Twitter lit up, with participants frantically posting updates."Move over Snooki and The Situation.. here comes CNBC's version of "Jerry Springer With Limos" (Hat tip Sir Arthur!!)," investor Doug Kass tweeted.

CNBC's own Jim Cramer, host of "Fast Money," wondered, "Whatever happened to the dignity of wealth!??"And financial news site Business Insider simply labeled it "The Greatest Moment In Financial TV History."

Toolbox Of The Small Business Marketing Cycle (Infograph) - MobiAD

sme_toolbox_small.gifOne of last year?s more impressive infographics came from the folks at Formstack, the appropriately titled ?Toolbox of the small business marketing cycle?.

The infograph looks at each of the five steps of the marketing cycle, and provides information, recommendations and tools for each stage. Check it out, there are a number of gems for the marketing-savvy small business owner.
Although some of the content may already been known, e.g. graphs showing the increasing of business use of social media marketing since 2002, other facts are quite surprising, e.g. the majority of clicks to websites found on Google come from the top 3 search results!

A handy tip for Twitter revealed that good content and humour are the biggest causes for retweets (with 92% and 84% respectively of people saying these were important), while over-tweeting about yourself and excessive tweeting were listed as the biggest reasons for people to unfollow you.

For those who dismiss the power of social media, the infographic might change your mind - 74% of consumers rely on social networks to help them make a purchase decision (doesn?t seem quite so useless now, does it?)

Most shocking of the statistics is that the average US office worker uses more than 10,000 sheets of printing and copying paper EACH YEAR. A mere 15-25% of business documents are online, showing that despite most consumers? preferences for online documentation (95% of respondents said they prefer online forms over paper), there?s still a huge amount of trees being cut down quite unnecessarily.

(AP) ? Top international financial officials wrapped up the World Economic Forum in the Swiss resort of Davos warning that much needs to be done to stabilize the world economy.

Despite relief that the euro, for all its struggles, remains intact and the U.S. has so far managed to get through a crucial budget hurdle, the International Monetary Fund's managing director Christine Lagarde urged world leaders to "not relax."

Lagarde said Saturday that the 17 European Union countries that use the euro have to follow through on steps to keep the troubles at banks from burdening governments.

And she said U.S. officials have to "indicate very promptly" how they're going to deal with their ongoing budget dispute between President Barack Obama and Republicans in Congress.

What if I am the One Not Communicating? | Blog | Mager ...

On the other hand, you have the right to expect healthy communication only when you have honestly addressed the situation, making sure you can answer certain questions for yourself. Questions to Ask Yourself?.

  1. Have you attempted to understand what the real issue is in the situation?
  2. Have you taken their needs into account?
  3. ?Have you made reasonable efforts to understand why there is a communication problem?
  4. Do you believe that your requests are reasonable?
  5. Have you offered realistic alternatives or compromises that you can truly accept?

And what if you?re the person who?s not communicating? It might be helpful to stand in the shoes of the other person and answer the questions in the previous section. In a great relationship, communication is the foundation for real happiness. Why do you think that no communication is the better alternative? Why do you think either you or the other benefits by a situation that makes one or both of you more uncomfortable?

Communication (or the lack of it) tells you so much about the relationship and where you stand. Whatever the situation, your honest and responsive communication will enable solutions that are best for both of you. You owe it to yourself?and to the other. UK economy shrinks anew, flirts with "triple dip"

LONDON (Reuters) - A slump in North Sea oil production, lower factory output and a hangover from the London Olympics caused Britain's economy to shrink more than expected in late 2012, pushing it perilously close to a "triple-dip" recession.

The Office for National Statistics said on Friday that Britain's gross domestic product fell 0.3 percent in the fourth quarter - a sharper fall than the 0.1 percent decline expected by analysts. GDP grew by 0.9 percent between July and September.

Sterling fell to a five-month low against the dollar and to its lowest against the euro in over a year after the data.

"This is a very disappointing outturn," said Philip Shaw, economist at Investec. "Markets realize that figures can be revised ... but clearly now the talk will focus on whether we are in a triple-dip recession."

Britain's economy is now 3.3 percent smaller than its peak in Q1 2008, having recovered only about half the output lost during the financial crisis - a worse performance than other major economies. The country slipped back into recession in the last three months of 2011, and only emerged from it in the third quarter of 2012, after a boost from the London Olympics.

The biggest driver for the fourth-quarter fall in GDP was a 10.2 percent drop in mining and quarrying output.

Why Should You Invest In Google Instead Of Apple? | Stocks ...

My firm wanted to update readers with information about the tech names that we have been covering. The key takeaway from recent technology trends is to stop hoping you can pick the right multiple and go with what is working.? Ror the last several months, we have said to invest in what is working in tech. We said we like Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) over Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) repetitively. Readers will recall we went to a sell in APPL back on November 1.? We first alerted readers of Google?s move to a Buy on December 3 and then again alerted readers of its move to a Strong Buy on January 4.? If you averaged in and bought on both days, you should now be up 5.78%.? At this juncture, the name is not overbought and would remain long.

The next name we have been very bullish on has been Salesforce.com (NYSE:CRM). We first alerted reader of a Strong Buy on CRM back n November 30.? The name is still not overbought and we would remain long.

Lastly we have Netflix (NASDAQ:NFLX).? We first alerted readers of our Strong Buy on November 16. However, we alerted readers around $100 to reduce exposure and lock in profits. We were clearly early, leaving additional gains on the table. At this point, the name is still not overbought and can remain long.

UK's Osborne says to stick to deficit reduction plan

DAVOS, Switzerland (Reuters) - British Chancellor George Osborne knocked back suggestions on Thursday from the International Monetary Fund's chief economist that he should consider slowing his deficit reduction plan.

"I have been prepared to let the automatic stabilisers operate in the UK but I don't think it is right to abandon a credible deficit plan," Osborne said at an event in Davos, Switzerland hosted by broadcaster CNBC.

"That credibility is very hard won and easily lost and I think it would be a huge mistake to put that at risk."

Osborne also said he would make the case in a future referendum for Britain to remain in the European Union if it reformed.

"I'm arguing for reform in Europe and Britain being part of a reformed Europe. You can't ignore the growing gap between the governed and those who claim to govern," he said.

Challenge Day 19: Light Up the Living Room | Organized Home

Floors and furniture, walls and decor all work together to create an inviting living room, but without light, they're cardboard actors on a darkened stage.

What's the state of lighting in your living room? Can the family converse, read, craft or watch television in comfort?

Today in the Cleaning Grand Plan Challenge, we'll let the light shine in the living room, and consider options to bring the right light where it's needed in your organized home.

Today's Assignment:
Light Up the Living Room

Overhead light fixtures are fine for bedrooms, and indispensable in work areas like kitchens--but check many modern homes, and you'll find living room lighting is left to the homeowner.

That's fine! Because living rooms present unique lighting challenges, and the best solutions are the ones that reflect your family's use of the room.

For instance, a formal living room devoted to conversation will glow in the soft light of table lamps and corner torchieres, but if family members try to read there, it'll be an invitation to eyestrain!

To bring light where it's needed--and banish it when it's not wanted--you'll want to consider appropriate lighting for each activity center in the room.

Today, go back to Tuesday's list of living room activity centers, and evaluate the lighting required by each one.

How does your current lighting measure up, center by center?

Some activities do best with little or no light, such as watching television or playing video games. Other activities like reading, knitting or doing homework require proper task lighting--which, in turn, may be too bright for group activities like playing board games.

Look for flexible solutions to light up the living room where and when you need it. For example, equipping a table lamp with a three-way bulb will provide a soft glow when viewing television, moderate lighting for conversation, and shine brightly on the family's knitter when required.

If the room includes an overhead fixture, installing a dimmer switch allows easy, custom lighting levels for any activity.

Swinging floor lamps can do double duty. Folded straight, they act as room lamps, but swung over a reading chair, they provide proper task light for paperwork or reading.

Color temperature can make a big difference between a harsh, cold room and one that is warm and inviting. If the room looks cold and bright, check out options to warm and soften living room light.

Light bulbs with a softer tint cut harsh light, as do lampshades in softer colors than stark white.

For task lighting, natural spectrum bulbs can be a big help for the family's readers and crafters; they give off a clear, vision-friendly light that's perfect for close work and color matching.

Ready? Today, let the light shine in the living room!
