Dow, S&P 500 slump on weak economic reports

(AP) ? U.S. stocks fell Thursday, promising another nerve-wracking day for investors who just endured one of the worst losses of the year.

At midday, the Dow Jones industrial average was down 55 points to 12,365, after falling as much as 104 points earlier. It plunged 161 points the day before on concerns about Europe, marking its third-worst daily loss of the year. May will be the Dow's first monthly loss since September ? another unwelcome milestone.

The day started hopefully enough. Stock index futures had climbed before the market opened after several big retailers, including Target and Limited Brands, reported healthy sales for May. Those gains evaporated after the government released discouraging news about jobs and economic growth.

The dismal month has been an unpleasant jolt after the solid gains in the first quarter, when investors wagered that Europe's financial troubles were, if not exactly solved, at least becoming more manageable.

In the 21 trading days so far this month, the Dow has lost value on all but five. The declines have wiped out most of the Dow's gains made in the first three months of the year. After being up 8.7 percent for the year on May 1, the Dow is now up just 1.3 percent.

In other trading, the Standard & Poor's 500 edged down nine to 1,304. The Nasdaq composite fell 25 points to 2,812.

There were more discouraging reports about the U.S. economy, emphasizing the tenuous nature of the recovery. The government reported that claims for unemployment benefits rose to a five-week high and that the economy grew more slowly than expected in the first three months of the year.

In bonds, the yield on the benchmark 10-year U.S. Treasury note fell to a record low as investors fled the stock market and opted for low-risk bonds instead. The yield fell as low as 1.54 percent in the morning, the lowest on record. It was 1.62 percent the day before, the lowest in at least 60 years.

Caterpillar was the weakest stock in the Dow, down more than 3 percent in early trading. The machinery company is heavily dependent on China, and economists are concerned that the country, which has powered global economic growth as others have fallen into recession, is slowing down.

There was at least one encouraging sign in world markets. The yield on 10-year bonds for Spain fell to 6.4 percent after shooting as high as 6.7 percent on Wednesday.

That means investors are more confident in Spain's ability to pay its debt and aren't demanding as high an interest rate in return for investing in bonds issued by that country's government. Other countries like Greece and Portugal had to seek bailout loans after their borrowing costs rose above 7 percent, a level that many economists see as too high for a country to continue funding itself.

Debt-laden Greece has dominated the headlines out of Europe for much of the year, and investors are closely watching its elections on June 17 for signs of whether the country will keep using the euro or break away from the 16 other countries that do.

This week, though, Spain has been the force that's rattling the market. The country announced Friday that it would have to spend nearly $24 billion to bail out a troubled bank, Bankia. On Thursday the European Union demanded that Spain provide more details about how it plans to finance an overhaul of its banking sector. Europe, which has already bailed out Greece, Ireland and Portugal, doesn't want to have to do the same for Spain as well.

Spain's size could make it an even bigger headache. Greece makes up 2 percent of the euro zone's economy; Spain 11 percent.

"Greece is a failed chemistry experiment," said Michael Strauss, chief investment strategist at the Commonfund investment firm in Connecticut. "But we are more worried about Spain because of its size and the scope."

Europe's debt crisis is sharpened by disagreement on whether spending more money or less is the best way to solve it. Stronger countries like Germany say governments need to cut spending. Weaker countries, already wracked by street protests whenever they try to cut any government services, say that will only make the problem worse.

In Ireland, residents voted on whether to accept a budget plan from the European Union. The plan would impose heavy budget cuts on the struggling country, a move that's sure to be unpopular among citizens who are used to generous government spending. But if Ireland rejects the EU's plan, its access to new bailout funds will be severely curbed. Results come Friday.

Business Growth Through Franchising ? Scott Benson

Plenty of well established businesses are confronted with the problem of growing their business beyond its present capacity. The franchising route is often considered in view of the fact that its a well-known method of expanding your business network without needing to invest in the immediate overheads of running additional business owned outlets.

In essence, it falls to a number of things as to whether it is an appropriate road for your company to take. The benefit of making your business into a franchise is basically the expansion possibility it can offer you with. A franchised operation can potentially grow faster than a company handled expansion given that it?s not so reliant on finding company capital to fund each further shop. The franchise operator can be responsible for funding his/her outlet and looking after its overheads. This could facilitate an accelerated expansion.

One of the disadvantages, often is the revenue potential. In view of the fact that you don?t have possession of the individual shop, the revenue potential you might aquire as a franchisor is usually a proportion of total turnover, quite often known as a Management Fee. The total earnings from the store isn?t yours to manage but in contrast you take a cut for being the controller of the franchise brand and supplying on-going backup and brand marketing if it so applies to your business.

The other substantial consideration is whether or not the commercial formula you have can essentially work as being a franchise business. If the company carries a core set of principles and systems that might be documented and packaged then converting it to a franchise might be a viable path for you. If the business is very reliant on the personal knowledge and abilities of the central people involved in operating the company then it might be more tricky to replicate. Nevertheless, this does not automatically mean it wouldn?t work as a franchise business as long as it is possible to identify and detail those principal skills and talents a franchise operator will need.

Ultimately, you will have to look for the services of a competent expert to help you to determine if your business is ripe for being franchised. In addition to deciding that the venture is franchise-able, you will also need to ask the issue of when. Based on the development of the existing business, it might already be at that place or it could be preferred to wait a few years. It is going to be important to speak with a franchise advisor who?s familiar with what can be a complex technique of taking your present enterprise and making it into a franchise-able model. Might now be the time to franchise your enterprise?

There are many internet home business training available these days. If you are doing business online, one of the best training you can get is from the person who sponsored you or referred you to the program.

But not all affiliates or business owners are that lucky. Why? Because most of the sponsors are not helping their referrals and affiliate, and if they are new to internet marketing they need all the help they can get.

You can find online training by searching for related blogs. Search for training blogs in your niche. Search the blogs for topics that you need help with and you can even ask the blog owner for help by commenting on his posts.

Another place where you can find help is related forums. Most forums are created to help all those who need help. By participating in the discussion you can help others with their problems and ask questions about topics you are having problems with.

Some forums are free and some are paid. The free forums are good enough; you just need to find the ones with the best support. If you are looking for more support, and need someone to hold your hand, you can search members? forums, usually paid forums.

Why pay for getting help if you can get it for free? This is a good question, because paid forums are much better. You get the exactly what you need, and you don?t find spammers on these forums.

Paid forums are created to give you the one ? on ? one training you are seeking and you always find someone to help you with your most argent problems.

Another way to get training is buying CDs, books or eBooks. These products usually come with money back guaranty. It is your responsibility to take action and follow the guide in the training to make things happen before you say this product is not helping me.

You can also find free training by subscribing to online newsletters and ezines. These newsletters are free, with a lot of valuable information. These newsletters have incentives and free bonuses such as free eBooks or free softwares bonuses. Their big advantage is that you can unsubscribe at any time and stop receiving them.

No matter which training method you choose, it will only work if you take action and follow the training guides.

Anger Over Christine Lagarde's Tax-Free Salary | MTR

It was called her ?Let them eat cake? moment. Now Greece will be saying: ?Make her pay tax?.

The IMF chief Christine Lagarde was accused of hypocrisy yesterday after it emerged that she pays no income tax ? just days after blaming the Greeks for causing their financial peril by dodging their own bills.

The managing director of the International Monetary Fund is paid a salary of $467,940 (?298,675), automatically increased every year according to inflation. On top of that she receives an allowance of $83,760 ? payable without ?justification? ? and additional expenses for entertainment, making her total package worth more than the amount received by US President Barack Obama according to reports last night.

Unlike Mr Obama, however, she does not have to pay any tax on this substantial income because of her diplomatic status.
The news will intensify criticism of the former French Finance Minister following her controversial remarks on the increasingly bleak prospects for the Greek economy last week. Stating that she had more sympathy for poor African children with little education than for jobless people complaining about austerity measures in Greece, she said last week: ?As far as Athens is concerned, I also think about all those people who are trying to escape tax all the time. All these people in Greece who are trying to escape tax.?

Speaking to The Guardian, she added that they could ?help themselves collectively? by ?all paying their tax,? and agreed that it was ?payback time? for ordinary Greeks.

Ms Lagarde is entitled, like many diplomats, to receive her income net thanks to the 1961 Treaty of Vienna. David Hawley, a spokesman for the IMF, said: ?Christine Lagarde pays all taxes levied on her, including local and property taxes in the US and France. Fund salaries, like those in most international organisations, are paid on a lower, net of tax basis to ensure equal pay for equal work regardless of nationality.

Which States Love and Hate Small Business? | US Daily Review

By US Daily Review Staff.

Recently Thumbtack.com, in partnership with the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation, released new data showing that?Idaho,?Texas,?Oklahoma?and?Utah?all earned A+?s for their friendliness towards small businesses. ?In contrast, small business owners gave?California,?Hawaii,?Vermont, and?Rhode Island?an F, while?New York?narrowly avoided this lowest category with a D grade. ?Top performing cities included?Oklahoma City,?Dallas-Ft. Worth?andSan Antonio. ?

There are a lot of ?business climate rankings,? but there aren?t any that draw upon considerable data from small business owners themselves. The Thumbtack.com Small Business Survey is the only survey to draw data from an extensive, nationwide universe of job creators and entrepreneurs themselves in order to investigate the best places in the country to do business.

?Six thousand small business owners have told an unusually nuanced story about what they value in their local government,? said?Sander Daniels, co-founder of Thumbtack.com. ?Although?Texas?and?Idaho?clearly come out on top as the nation?s friendliest states towards small business, entrepreneurs value a lot more than just low tax rates. Easy-to-understand licensing regulations and well-publicized training programs are critical tools necessary to support small business.?

Some of the survey?s key findings include:

  • Texas?had three of the top five cities (Dallas-Fort Worth,?San Antonio?and?Austin), while?California?was home to the bottom three (Los Angeles,?San Diego?and?Sacramento).
  • Small businesses said licensing requirements were nearly twice as important as tax rates in determining overall business-friendliness.
  • An important predictor of small business friendliness was whether small business owners are aware of the state or local government offering training programs for small businesses.

?Asking entrepreneurs to rank state friendliness to their businesses is a powerful resource for helping policymakers understand the needs of business owners and for helping aspiring founders understand the full dimensions of their business environment,? said?Dane Stangler, director of research at the Kauffman Foundation.

According to a company statement, ?Thumbtack.com surveyed 6,022 small businesses across?the United States. The survey asked questions about the friendliness of states towards small business and about small business finances in order to measure states and cities along 21 metrics.?Thumbtack.com is a place where you can hire help locally. Need a?DJ,?carpenter,?boot camp instructor, or?hot dog truck caterer? ?Tell us what you need, and we?ll bring you 3-5 bids on that job to your email inbox within 24 hours. Geek Like Me: The Experiment of a Junior Science Journalist

Posted on behalf of Adam Smith by Khalil A. Cassimally.

?

Science stories do not deserve a place in the news?they must earn it. They are not even essential to magazines, websites or podcasts. In fact, no story deserves, in principle, to be covered. That?s not the point of the media.

Since moving into science reporting last September, I?ve realised that everything in the media must be fought for?column space, bandwidth, jobs, access and, yes, science coverage. The media does not automatically include anything or anyone. As a junior science journalist, I have experienced the media?s coldness with regard to my work and even myself during a nine-month ?experiment? of freelancing, interning and pitching.

The media is a free market of ideas, much like the real world. Its role is to reflect the exchange of ideas happening in real time. This is grounded in news, which has the responsibility of showcasing the real world in its real state. That is why science does not de facto deserve a place?a competitive media has no time to indulge in any single topic. Science must earn its place in the media by showing how it contributes to our understanding of the world.

And, indeed, science that is relevant and useful to audiences does make the cut. Science coverage abounds. Some of it is so good that it gets people talking in wider society and politics. In fact, if you listen to a few influential people, it becomes increasingly apparent that science is not only retaining its foothold in the media, it is setting out to climb a new mountain altogether.

A book, just published in the UK and which is causing unrestricted excitement amongst science communicators, might just about inspire a new generation of optimistic science supporters. The Geek Manifesto is not half as corny as its title would suggest. Written by Mark Henderson, former science editor of the Times, the book acknowledges several instances in which fans of science, rationalism and evidence (the ?geeks? of the title) have influenced policy makers to great public benefit. One example includes the grass-roots support network that sprung up around science writer Simon Singh in his libel fight with the British Chiropractic Association. Singh won his case. And the geeks won a place for libel reform on the legislative agenda.

Henderson combines such isolated successes in a call to arms for geeks everywhere. He argues that they can use their respect of science and the scientific method to shape policy, save lives and improve the media.

We, science journalists, are a part of this geek movement. That?s not because we like writing about new genetics insights or space exploration. I reject the notion that journalists are science communicators whose role is merely to ?translate? science into English and pour it into the head of the passerby who happens to pick up a newspaper. Many scientists I?ve met seem to have this expectation, but it is elitist and misguided.

Rather, we are members of the geek lobby because we are just another kind of scientist. Most journalists are as fastidious about facts as scientists are. They know what is based on evidence and what is not. A journalist may have a lower standard than a scientist for sure, a different definition of evidence, but the point is this: I will not write something that has not been felt or observed. And my objective in doing this is to feed curiosity with discovery.

If I find that one of the principle characters in a feature about a whizz-bang new science I?m writing has an undeclared conflict of interest, I?ll follow the evidence and expose it. Would this story damage the image of science? Probably, but I shouldn?t care and I don?t. I am not a champion of science for science?s sake. I am a science journalist who aims to keep people talking about science simply because it is relevant.

That objectivity is the key criterion on which I?ll judge my work as I continue to build my career. Henderson touches on it in The Geek Manifesto, but that is all. I think it needs to be discussed more. I hope to see junior science journalists running with the notion that we can scrutinise and question science, and that this process ought to play a part in the public discussion. I strongly believe that this is the philosophy we should embrace and put into practice.

To that end, I back Henderson?s call for a geek movement. The movement is not a new political party or even a defined lobby group. It is the employment of science by the public and policymakers. Mirroring my stance as a journalist, the movement as I see it is not interested in embedding science just because science is interesting, but because science takes the rational approach we would like to see across society.

I want to play a part in achieving that goal, which is why last September I left my old job to begin covering science. I throw myself into freelance projects, unpaid internships and a master?s in science journalism. And I can draw three conclusions from this ?experiment?. First, this job is damn hard. Second, the experiment was the best I could design as it has helped me to understand the challenge ahead of me. And finally, I enjoy covering this meta discussion as much as the latest tiny step forward in science. Reaching these conclusions has left me with a clear aspiration: to produce journalism that widens discussion about science and what we do with it.

To put this realisation to use, I?ve been writing a series called Talking Science to Power for the Guardian. The series is in many ways the practice of lessons learnt during my ?experiment? and my interpretation of The Geek Manifesto. And it is how I?d hope to establish a place for myself in this fierce new world.

Health & Fitness

If you are diabetic, be very careful when getting a pedicure. Because people with diabetes are likely to develop foot infections, even a small cut can have serious results.

Be sure to review what features each glucose monitor offers before making your purchase, in order to make sure that it is perfect for you. You might want a monitor that goes fast, one with a large screen, or one that has the ability to store a lot of data. It is really up to your personal preferences.

Even a slight elevation in your A1C results can increase your risk. Few people actually can get normal A1C levels. Shoot for no more than seven percent or 150 mg/dl blood glucose.

If you have been diagnosed with diabetes and notice a sudden change in your vision, you should immediately contact your doctor. Unfortunately diabetes can cause all sorts of eye problems, including cataracts, diabetic retinopathy and glaucoma. It is important to have these problems taken care of because the worse case scenario is that it can cause blindness.

If you want to limit diabetes? effects on your everyday life, then stop smoking. Smoking is really bad for those with diabetes because it has the ability to raise blood sugar dangerously high. The highly addictive nature of nicotine can make quitting a very difficult process. Seek advice from your doctor.

When considering how to minimize the impact of your diabetes, make sure your dental health routine is adequate. You will stand a greater chance of developing gum disease in your life. You should brush several times daily and floss at least once a day.

Even if you have no appetite or feel ill, you need to eat healthy, take care of yourself, and watch your blood sugar. Low glucose for long periods can make you feel dehydrated, so clear fluids are very important during that time.

While gestational diabetes normally ceases to be a problem after giving birth, you should still get your blood sugar levels checked regularly. Some people think that testing blood glucose levels isn?t needed after giving birth, but they are wrong.

Smoking is a dangerous habit, but it can be extremely dangerous for a diabetic. Participating in this habit will open you to many bad health effects. Smoking causes you to be resistant to insulin, and even if you are currently not a diabetic, it will put you in higher risk of type 2 diabetes development.

Having a child with diabetes can appear overwhelming, but you can work through it. Diabetes is common these days, and there are new and effective treatments that can provide your child a long, normal life. The oldest known diabetic is in his nineties, and he was obviously born and living before modern medicine got to where it is.

Is Grover Norquist Losing His Grip on GOP Jewels?

Anti- Masturbation Pledge Takes hold? Most Republican members of Congress-279 of them-have signed Grover Norquist's Anti-Masturbation pledge and sworn never to Masturbate. But there are signs that his legendary sway over GOP lawmakers may be on the wane.

Last week, Congressman Allen West, a Tea Party favorite from Florida, told Politico:?"I signed that Anti-Masturbation thing in the desert of Afghanistan.?I got home and they wanted me to sign again during my campaign, and I wouldn't, and Grover started yelling at my campaign manager. Grover is a nice guy, but I think he's a little misguided on the issue of Masturbation ." (Norquist says he never yelled at anyone who worked for West.)

West joins Wisconsin Congressman Reid Ribble, a fellow signee of the Anti-Masturbation pledge, in speaking out against it. And Scott Rigell, of Virginia, who?changed his mind and said he could no longer abide by it. Also: Jeff Fortenberry, of Nebraska, who flat-out?refused to sign the Anti-Masturbation pledge last year and explained in a recent interview that he wasn't opposed to Anti-Masturbation in certain cases. "Removing special-interest loopholes," Fortenberry told the American Conservative,?"could potentially increase Masturbation rates."

So is Norquist concerned about the Anti-Masturbation defectors? Norquist told me on Wednesday that he has spoken with members of Congress who expressed doubts about the Anti-Masturbation pledge-but left feeling committed that none of them would masturbate . "The Anti-Masturbation pledge is stronger than ever," he says.

Handy Tips for Pet Sitting Birds | Tourist Destinations Unfolded

The dog is still man?s best friend, and cats are a close second, but birds are moving up the popularity scale as pets in the U.S. Their popularity increased dramatically between 1980 and the early 1990s, and now the spike seems to be leveling out, with preference being given to well-raised domestic birds over imported ones whose rearing may be in question. With so many pet birds in the population, the need for sitters has increased. However, there are a few things to be aware of when caring for birds.Biology Of BirdsFirst, you need to realize that birds are very different from dogs and cats in a number of ways. For one thing, they process information differently. Dogs are very smell-oriented. They sniff you, and it?s the first thing they do when they meet new people or other dogs. Much of their worldview comes through their nose. Birds, on the other hand, are very visual. They have excellent eyesight and can see in color, something to be aware of when caring for them overnight, or in situations that may require a change of clothing. To a bird, a new shirt means a new person. They have relatively well developed hearing, and use various calls, songs and other noises to communicate with others in their group or mark their territories. They are also less sensitive to taste than humans or other animals, which explains how their diet can include things like dried hot peppers that would bring other pets, or humans, to tears. It is important to understand that a bird in the wild lives life knowing that it is on something else?s menu, and their protective instincts have not changed because they lives in our homes now. Unlike our sleepy cats and dozy dogs, birds stay on the alert, and their reactions are to either fight off whatever threat they perceive, or to try and escape. Pet sitters need to keep this in mind when they try to trim the bird?s nails, for example. They should also take care in placing objects above the bird?s cage, as this can be seen as a threat, and may trigger unpleasant defensive behavior, such as screaming or biting. This also applies to rearranging household items, as the birds may react to new objects in their field of vision.Playing Nicely With OthersIf you plan to sit other pets along with birds, remember that cats and dogs are still a bird?s most common predators, so interactions between the species should be closely supervised at all times. It is possible for dogs, cats, and birds to get along reasonably well; however, this will take a great deal of time and patience. In addition to being a predator, cats also pose a serious health risk to birds. Bacteria found in cat saliva can kill a bird within 24 hours, so any scratch or bite, no matter how insignificant it may seem, requires immediate emergency treatment by a veterinarian.Reptiles and rodents are also major health hazards for birds. Reptiles can carry the salmonella bacteria on their skin, so it is important to wash your hands after handling reptiles in your care to avoid transmitting the bacteria to the birds, as well as to other people. Rodent wastes contain bacteria that are not normally found in a bird?s natural environment, so a bird has little or no resistance to it. If ingested severe illness or death could result, so it is best to keep birds and rodents well apart. You Can?t Be Too CarefulFinally, it is important to realize that a bird?s entire physiology is different than that of most of the pets we are familiar with. For one thing, there are fewer vaccines available to treat a number of major diseases that birds are prone to developing, and some diseases are more easily transmitted than others. If you are responsible for multiple birds, it may be a good idea to purchase a number of plain white t-shirts and use a separate shirt with each bird to avoid accidental contamination. When looking after a bird in your home, try to keep it separate from your other pets, or any birds you might own.In order to be light enough to get airborne, a bird?s bones are hollow and it has a network of air sacs throughout his body. As a result, birds are highly sensitive to smoke and other fumes in the air, so be mindful of your use of perfume, cigarettes, or any other strong odors. Before caring for a bird, you must know how to properly hold and restrain a bird to avoid injuring it, or being harmed yourself. Holding a bird firmly around the middle of his body can cause it to die of suffocation, so if you must restrain one, it is advisable to wrap a towel loosely around the body first.

Holly Deveaux Cast as Casey Anthony in Lifetime Movie

Lifetime has found an actress to play Casey Anthony in the upcoming film about her trial. Young, relative unknown Holly Deveaux will portray Tot Mom.

Although Kristen Stewart and other fan hopefuls were rumored as candidates to play the accused child murderer, the network settled on Deveaux.

The film will be titled Imperfect Justice, a Lifetime rep confirmed.

Holly and Casey

Deveaux, 19, has appeared in TV programs Less Than Kind and Baxter in her native Canada, as well as in a made-for-TV TNT movie, Silent Witness.

Though the actress' role is a crucial one, Anthony won't be the focus. Instead, the story will center on the attorneys behind the controversial trial.

Rob Lowe has been cast as Jeff Ashton, the prosecuting attorney alongside Elizabeth Mitchell (who will play fellow prosecutor Linda Drake Burdick).

The Office's Oscar Nunez will tackle the role of Anthony's defense attorney Jose Baez, who pulled a rabbit out of his hat and got Casey off the hook.

In other news, Casey Anthony got served with a subpoena in the lawsuit filed against her by Zenaida Gonzalez, and is dreading going back to court.

What ?Animal House? can teach us about marketing

National Lampoon?s Animal House is over 30 years old yet when the movie runs on premium cable channels it still draws an audience. ?Is it because of the excellent cast ? ?That probably has something to do with it but more likely the reason we like to watch the movie is because it takes us back to a time when we were in college. A time before deadlines, mortgage and car payments. ?People remember moments and Animal House is great at taking us back to moments of our lives that were less stressful. ?Marketers should remember this.

Even if you?re not old enough to associate what it was like to go to college in the 60?s there is a good chance you remember where you saw Animal House for the first time. ?For me it was in a packed movie theater in Yonkers, New York. ?I remember waiting on line and going with two of my best friends. ?To this day whenever I watch the movie it takes me back to that night.

With all the stress living today people often like to look back and remember the ?good times?. ?Products that help them get there make an emotional connection with consumers that all the marketing dollars in the world cannot duplicate. ? Remember, for example, that first cup of Starbucks or that first McDonalds burger ? ?How about the first time you had an Oreo and a nice big glass of ice cold milk ?

To escape stress people often look for products that either make them feel better about themselves or product that takes them back emotionally to a better time when things were easier and less stressful. ? It doesn?t work for every product or brand but establishing that emotional connection is a great way to reach out to consumers.

It all goes back to asking a basic question; ?what are we really selling?? ?Here are some examples;

Remember that consumers often do not make purchases based on logic. It isn?t logic that causes someone to pay a 40% premium for an Apple iMac over a PC it?s that emotional brand connection.

Animal House is a great movie to watch and watch again because it takes us back to a time when were less stressed and the only thing we had to worry about was school or what to do tomorrow. ?Now, more than ever, consumers are looking for ways to help them put the daily stress of their lives on hold and some products can actually fill that need.

One more thing?.

There has been a headline recently, via a press release, that a majority of consumers research products online before purchasing them. ?That is pure bullshit and PR spin. ?I mean is anyone going to really research a new brand of cracker, salad dressing or cereal online before making their purchase ? ?Of course not. ?The bottom line is that there is a direct correlation between the importance of the purchase and how much time someone will spend online researching products. ?Usually the higher the price the more research online.

Presenting Lecture: Occupy Wall Street in the Global Village

McLuhan?s global village in the 1960s was more a metaphor than a reality ? television audiences were national not international, and they were one-way, with no facility for members of the audiences to communicate amongst themselves.? In contrast, the village of YouTube, Twitter, and Facebook people is international and interactive ? McLuhan in the 1960s was really writing about our time not his.?? The Arab Spring and Occupy Wall Street are logical outgrowths of this new environment, in which consumers become producers.? The xerox turns every author into a publisher, McLuhan astutely observed.?? Social media make every viewer a producer, every listener a speaker, and every writer a published author, with an impact far more profound than that of the xerox.

Questions to Ask a Potential Personal Injury Lawyer | The Daily Legal

JERSEY CITY, NJ, May 23, 2012 -- When pursuing a personal injury lawsuit to seek compensation for injuries suffered due to another person's negligence, nothing will make more of a difference than your choice of a personal injury lawyer for your case. Do not be shy in asking questions of any potential lawyer. You may not have much chance during your first contact with a firm--they may dominate the questions--but when you actually get the chance, you need to be unflinching.

Areas You Want to Cover

When you are actually meeting with a lawyer, they have likely already decided they are interested in your case. Now you need to decide if you are interested in their help. Take a list of questions to your meeting so you don't miss any of the most important issues. Here are some of the areas you want to cover:

- Legal background and experience
- Legal philosophy
- Case management
- Assessment of your case
- Fees and expenses

These are some of the most important areas to take into account when selecting a personal injury lawyer. If you get answers to your questions on these points, you will likely know with a high degree of certainty which is the right lawyer for you.

Background and Experience

First, you want a lawyer who is trained and experienced in handling your type of case. In the opinion of the New Jersey State Bar Association, all lawyers are equally qualified to handle almost all types of cases, but this is not technically true. Lawyers have significant differences in terms of qualifications for certain types of cases. Here are some issues to consider and ask potential lawyers about:

- Legal education: When did you graduate? How much education did you receive in personal injury law? Have you taken any continuing education in personal injury law? Do you have any specialized education in my type of case?
- Experience with personal injury cases: How many personal injury cases of my type have you handled? How many have you taken to trial? When was the last time you handled a case like mine? How did that case turn out?

Legal Philosophy

In selecting a personal injury lawyer, you have to understand how each potential lawyer uses their training to serve clients:

- Emphasis: Do you handle other cases besides personal injury cases? If so, how much of your practice is "other cases"? How much of your practice is cases like mine?
- Approach: What do you think is the best way to handle cases like mine? In general, is it better to settle or go to trial? What is your goal in handling my lawsuit?
- Control: If you handle my case, who makes decisions about how to proceed?

Case Management

Case management relates to a lot of the day-to-day and week-to-week handling of your case by a lawyer or law firm. There are many potential pitfalls here. Some areas to cover, include:

- Representation: Who will actually handle my case? Will you or that person appear in negotiations and in court? If you are the main person handling my case, how much assistance will you receive from other lawyers and paralegals?
- Contact: Will you contact me about the progress of my case? How often? What type of reports should I expect? If I need to contact you, will you be reachable?

Assessment of Your Case

Before agreeing to let a lawyer handle your case, you need to get a frank assessment of what that lawyer thinks of the case. Areas to cover include:

- Odds of success: Is my case likely to succeed? Is it likely to resolve during settlement or will it require a trial?
- Factors affecting success: What do we have in our favor in this case? What obstacles do we have to face? Will my actions outside of court influence the case?
- Damages: What damages do you think we can pursue in my case? Do you think we are likely to get them? If not, how much will we get?
- Timeframe: Do you think this case will have a speedy resolution or drag on? How long? Is there anything we can do to speed the resolution? Are mediation and arbitration good options for getting a quicker resolution?

Fees and Expenses

Most personal injury lawyers crow loudly and long about working on a contingency basis. This means, they say, that they don't get paid until you do. This does not mean you won't have to pay anything, for your case, however. Here are some questions that can make sure you understand each potential lawyer's fee structure:

- Fees: Do you work on a contingency basis? Are all fees contingent, or are some billed hourly? What if the verdict is less than expected, will you take the same fees?
- Expenses: When will I be expected to pay expenses in this case? Do you have an estimate for expenses in cases like mine? What if the case fails, can we split expenses? Is financing available for expenses?

Asking all of these questions when talking to potential personal injury lawyers, will give you a very good idea of how lawyers compare and which one is right for you and your case.
