Social Media Marketing in Trinidad and Tobago: 8 Steps to Building ...

It?s not just what you know, it?s who you know. When it comes to business, this has never been more true. With dozens of social media marketing options in Trinidad and Tobago, knowing the right people can make a substantial difference in your success level. However, these days, it?s also how you?re connected to those people, and what messages you are sending them that can make or break your business. The most important place you can be to elevate your business potential is on LinkedIn. Launched in 2003, the business networking site now boasts more than 130 million users, making it a powerful tool.

Using social media tools in some form or fashion is simple, but using them effectively requires understanding how to make the most of what each has to offer. While LinkedIn is considered a social media site, it is certainly more business than social, and using it calls for keeping that frame of mind throughout all of your actions on the site.

There are certain protocols users should follow to keep things relevant.

Perhaps the most crucial element to using LinkedIn is creating a complete profile. It is more than posting a resume and collecting connections. There are 8 steps you should follow to set up a powerful and effective profile, according to Anum Hussain and Jamie Turner of Hubspot.

? It sounds simple (though many don?t complete this process) but use your full name, and include a professional image (photo).

? Write a brief, personalized headline. Include your current position.

? Add your work history. You may be tempted to include every club or activity in your past, but stick to highlighting only professional experiences. Club memberships and college activities can be included in the education section of your profile.

? Customize your LinkedIn URL. Avoid using your company name, as you may not always be there. This is done on the ?Edit Profile? page. Locate the ?Edit? link next to ?Public Profile? at the bottom of the page. You will be taken to a new page where, on the lower right, prompts you on how to create a customized LinkedIn URL

? Customize any website URLs. Click edit next to ?Additional Information?. The first section here calls for websites ? the drop down menu provides options for various types of websites. Choose ?other?. This enables you to enter a more specific title than what is provided.

? Ask for recommendations. One note here, sometimes the best way to get a recommendation is to write them for others. You should have at least 3 recommendations to be considered ?complete?.

? Connect your Twitter account to your LinkedIn to provide a broader audience for sharing posts, discussions, and other information.

? Grow your network. Remember though, quality trumps quantity here. You are looking for connections that are in line with your industry and can help you in that arena. Do, however, connect with as many individuals fitting that bill as possible. Staying inside a small circle of contacts you already connect with regularly won?t help you spread your message, or provide you with as much new and useful insight.

Building your complete profile is the first crucial step in effectively using LinkedIn. After that, it is about mastering the site and it?s social media marketing applications in Trinidad and Tobago, and staying engaged on a frequent basis.
