Join us as we look into the concepts and processes characteristic of the beginning of the 21st century via the frameworks provided to us by Flusser and McLuhan. Biography: Richard Cavell is the author of?McLuhan in Space: A Cultural Geography, the first book to articulate the spatial turn in media studies and McLuhan?s foundational role within it; he is also the editor of three additional books, the author of more than 70 chapters, articles and reviews, and the creator of the websitespectersofmcluhan.net. Professor Cavell has been a faculty member of the universities of Padua and Bologna, and his work has been translated into French, Italian, German, Romanian, Japanese, and Bengali. In conjunction with the McLuhan centennial, Professor Cavell has given invited lectures on McLuhan in Marburg, Berlin, Kiel, The Hague, Stockholm, Frankfurt, Edmonton, Toronto, Tokyo, Belgrade, and Paderborn. Professor Cavell is joint Founder of the award-winning?Cultural Spaces?series at the University of Toronto Press; founder of the International Canadian Studies Center at UBC; a founding member of the Canadian Association for Cultural Studies; Past President of the Canadian Comparative Literature Association; and principal founder of the new program in media studies at UBC.

Paul Levinson, PhD, is Professor of Communication & Media Studies at Fordham University in NYC.? His nonfiction books, including?The Soft Edge?(1997),?Digital McLuhan?(1999),?Realspace?(2003),?Cellphone(2004), and?New New Media (2009; 2nd edition, 2012), ?have been translated into ten languages.? His science fiction novels include The Silk Code?(1999),?Borrowed Tides?(2001),?The Consciousness Plague(2002),?The Pixel Eye?(2003), and?The Plot To Save Socrates?(2006). He appears on ?The O?Reilly Factor? and numerous TV and radio programs.? His 1972 LP,?Twice Upon a Rhyme, was re-issued in 2010.? He reviews? television in his InfiniteRegress.tv blog, writes political commentary for?Mediaite, and was listed in The Chronicle of Higher Education?s ?Top 10 Academic Twitterers? in 2009.

Presenting Lecture: Occupy Wall Street in the Global Village

McLuhan?s global village in the 1960s was more a metaphor than a reality ? television audiences were national not international, and they were one-way, with no facility for members of the audiences to communicate amongst themselves.? In contrast, the village of YouTube, Twitter, and Facebook people is international and interactive ? McLuhan in the 1960s was really writing about our time not his.?? The Arab Spring and Occupy Wall Street are logical outgrowths of this new environment, in which consumers become producers.? The xerox turns every author into a publisher, McLuhan astutely observed.?? Social media make every viewer a producer, every listener a speaker, and every writer a published author, with an impact far more profound than that of the xerox.
