The Criterion Collection on Hulu features classic films by some of the greatest directors of all time -- including Ingmar Bergman, John Cassavetes, Charles Chaplin, Jean-Luc Godard, Akira Kurosawa, David Lynch, Roman Polanski, Francois Truffaut, and Orson Welles -- as well as plenty of documentaries and modern movies. As a result, it would be hard to narrow them all down to a list that would please everyone, but Hulu has given cinephiles and those who just like to watch a good flick a chance to explore a rich collection of movies.
Many would do well to check out ?Breathless,? directed by Godard with a story written by Truffaut. The film is a classic example of the French Nouvelle Vague style, complete with the director?s signature jump cuts.
?Seven Samurai,? directed by Kurosawa, is always mentioned as one of the best movies ever -- and if you have yet to see it, Hulu?s free preview is the perfect opportunity to do so.
If you want something a little weirder, Lynch?s directorial debut ?Eraserhead? will do the trick. The director of ?Twin Peaks,? ?Blue Velvet,? and ?Mullholland Drive? got his start with this strange black-and-white movie.
For something a little more timeless, Chaplin?s ?City Lights? is a wonderful comedy that has plenty of heart.
For a great mystery, ?M? by Fritz Lang will have you on the edge of your seat.
Films from many genres and many countries are represented, with the modern movies including works by Steven Soderbergh and Guillermo Del Toro
If there is nothing good at the theater this weekend, chances are there will be plenty of good movies you can find in the Criterion Collection.
