5 die when motor home carrying 18 crashes

Officials work the scene of a Minnesota-bound motor home that crashed into a ravine off Interstate 35 in northeast Kansas Sunday, killing five family members.

Updated 4:18 a.m. ET: Five members of a large extended family were killed and at least four others were in critical condition after the motor home they were driving crashed into a ravine in Kansas around 9 a.m. local time on Sunday.

The motor home was carrying 18 family members returning to Minnesota and pulling a trailer, the Minnesota Star-Tribune reported. Those killed were members of the Kerber family, according to the Star-Tribune, which ran an auto shop outside of Jordan, Minn.


A hospital spokeswoman said she was told the family was returning from a dirt-bike competition in Texas. The family traveled often as one of the sons was on his way to a professional racing career.

Their Freightliner motor home crashed through a guard rail on Interstate 35 near Williamsburg, Kan., after losing control, according to Kansas Highway Patrol.

NBC News affiliate KSHB 41 Action News said the side of the group's trailer had "G-Dogg Racing.com" on the side of it.?Several motocross bikes were seen inside the trailer.

Passers-by stopped to help before first responders arrived. One of them, Mary Mohn, told the station: "We looked down the embankment and realized this was a very significant accident."

Officials have not yet released the names of the victims.
