This Tiny Roku-Equipped Projector Is Your Deal of the Day

Today's Amazon Gold Box deal is worth checking out. It's 3M's experimental Roku streaming projector for $170. There aren't many gadgets like this one?the idea is to pair a small, portable projector with a Roku Streaming Stick and then you'll be able to watch Netflix or Hulu wherever and whenever you want. The actual experience isn't so polished: Brent Rose reviewed it, and had problems with the resolution (a measly 854?480), the built-in speakers (quiet and tinny), and the ability to fix keystoning (nonexistent.) But even if the picture quality isn't optimal, you still end up with a Roku Streaming Stick and a portable HDMI projector. Brent concludes:

It's a fun novelty, but for most people $300 is too expensive for a novelty.

That's understandable, but at $170?a genuine steal?it's a lot easier to try out this particular novelty, especially when it means you could be watching movies in your backyard this summer. [Amazon]

The Nook HD Is Always On Sale and This Sale Is The Best Yet

Barnes & Noble's Kindle competitor, the Nook, hasn't been flying off the shelves. Perhaps that's why today's deal?which makes the Nook HD $50 less than the Kindle Fire?is the third in the past month. First, Barnes & Noble started giving away a Nook Simple Touch with their full-color tablets. That was a pretty good sale! Then last week certain stores had the Nook HD+?a full size tablet?for $150.

Now, available online and at Best Buy, you can pick up a Nook HD for $150 and a Nook HD+ for $200. Although these are supposedly limited-time prices, because of Mother's Day, it is also the third promotion on this tablet in the last 45 days. Whether these sales are a play for larger marketshare for Barnes & Noble's newly Google-fied tablet or if it's a Touchpad-style fire sale remains to be seen. [Best Buy or Barnes & Noble]
